In a world where standards, requirements and the very spirit of companies demand greater environmental sustainability every day, powder coatings acquire a relevant role due to their reputation of being environmentally friendly, of being a "green product", hence the innovations in this field keep them in the role of protagonist.
The powder coatings industry is making more and more advances every day in search of this ideal of sustainability and a feature such as durability and in this case hyper durability makes a big difference.
The longevity of powder coatings is associated with UV protection and corrosion resistance, and hyper durability is a matter of great importance for the construction and architecture industry, which is why the North American market uses the AAMA specifications: 2603 (durability of one year in Florida), 2604 (durability of five years in Florida) and 2605 (durability of more than 10 years in Florida).
The AAMMA: 2604 certified powder coatings market has an excellent performance record with polyester based binders that contain high performance additives and can maintain over 5 years of over 50% gloss and minimal color change with exposure in South Florida.
But it is only now that powder coatings that achieve AAMMA: 2065 have become commercially available and are of great importance to the construction and architectural industry. These paints are based on fluoropolymers that can last up to 20 years in harsh environments such as South Florida.
The companies that have made the greatest contributions to meeting this standard are IFS Coatings, PPG, Axalta, ProTech and AkzoNobel. Fluoropolymers were originally patented by AGC Chemicals America as Lumiflon®; Fluoropolymers or FEVE (Fluro-ethylene vinyl ether) have a hydroxyl functionality and are typically baked with aliphatic isocyanate crosslinkers which are used in polyurethane powder coatings.
Fluoropolymers can produce a wide variety of colors, gloss and surface profiles, which can meet even the highest demands of the construction and architectural world with hyper durability and the ambition to exceed AAMMA: 2065 standards and pass 20 years of longevity, contributing to sustainability by not requiring costly maintenance that may involve part replacement, new coatings and use of products that have a high VOC content, further lowering the carbon footprint.
